Nonniekaye Shelburne is a Hematology and Stem Cell Transplant Clinical Nurse Specialist within the Research and Practice Development Service of the Clinical Center Nursing Department at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Mrs. Shelburne received her B.S. from University of Maryland, Baltimore in 1998 and started her career at the NIH as a Cancer Nurse Intern. She provided direct patient care within the Hematology & Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BMT) program of care from 1998 to 2004. Mrs. Shelburne received her Masters from the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 2002.  She began her role as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in 2004, covering the hematology and stem cell transplant patient population.  Mrs. Shelburne is an Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse and a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner in Acute Care Oncology. Mrs. Shelburne has received three NIH Directors awards for her continued efforts to improve the practice of BMT, improve nursing oncology certification, and development and evaluation of the falls risk management program at NIH. She is an active member of the ONS BMT SIG,  Blood and Marrow Transplant Tandem Meetings Planning Committee (2003 – 2007), and ONS DC Chapter (2003-2007).

Program Interests

Delirium Algorithm and Standards Development
The delirium algorithm program was developed for early identification of delirium in patient receiving stem cell transplantation.  This led to an department wide standard of practice development for the care of patient with delirium.

Falls Risk Tool and Intervention
Development of a falls risk tool for early detection of risk in the patient population seen at the Clinical Center. The tool is integrated into the standard of practice for fall risk detection and prevention.

Advanced Oncology Education Series (AOES)
Program developed to support the ongoing educational needs of experienced oncology nurses at NIH and in the community

Research Participant Education
Lead a task force working to manage educational materials, programs, policies, standards, and resources for education of research participants
