Oncology Nurse Internship Program
The internship program is now in its 20th year at the Clinical Center. The program has been extended to 2 years and the curriculum is being modified to include leadership training along with base concepts for oncology nursing practice. The program outcomes have been modified to include OCN certification and leadership measurements.
Preceptor Support Program
Developed an EBP project to provide support to staff willing to serve as preceptors to new staff which includes a structured program and monitoring. Continue to evaluate the program and make modifications to current program.

Behavioral Health Restraint Reduction/Suicide Prevention Monitoring
Organizes BH service and NPCS efforts to reduce, and where possible, eliminate restraint and seclusion use; this includes medical-surgical programs of care when consulted. Oversees revision of standards of practice and procedures related to the prevention and use of seclusion and restraint through Shared Governance system. Evidence-Based Practice project on Child Psychiatry Research Program of Care is focused on the early identification of patient needs underlying acting-out behaviors; individualized care planning processes within a system of primary nursing care delivery and interdisciplinary care are used to provide for patient safety – and comfort.
Behavioral Health Liaison for Nursing and Patient Care Services
Clinically supports medical-surgical staff/leadership/interdisciplinary team members when consulted to identify psycho-social needs of research participants outside of NIMH research programs.
Crisis Prevention Institute Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Training Program
Senior-level instructor for CPI NVCI. Coordinates and provides 2-day intensive violence prevention-intervention workshop as needed for the BH nursing staff, interdisciplinary staff, NPCS staff, NIH police, and others as requested. Provides developmental supervision to newer CPI instructors.
Advanced Practice Nursing Preceptor
Provides psychiatric-mental health clinical preceptor services as requested by Advanced Practice P-MH programs (Catholic University of America, University of Maryland).
Combined Neuroscience Institutional Review Committee Member
Provides evaluative input as primary and general IRB member for National Institute of Alcohol and Alcohol Abuse, National Institute of Mental Health, National Eye Institute, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke & National Institute of Dental, Cranio-Facial Research.
Evidence-Based Practice Project: Depression Associated with Chronic Medical Illness

With CNS colleagues, revised the Standard of Practice for Clinical Nursing Staff, devised Surge Center design layout to maximize flow, and Procedure for use during emergency activation of the Surge Center within the NIH Clinical Center.

The Internship is a 2 year program for the newly boarded Registered Nurse. The program encompasses various modalities of educational experiences and is developed in conjunction with the Medical-Surgical Nurse Managers.
ELNEC Program
The ELNEC program was developed and presented to impart the knowledge and skills needed by nursing to be prepared to care for patients and families facing end-of-life/palliative care issues.
Nursing Skills Lab
The Skills Lab will afford an environment for practice, retraining or revalidation of clinical skills, to ensure effective, efficient, and safe patient care practices.

CRN 2010: Outreach Strategies for Clinical Research Nurses
Blood Glucose Management Service (BGMS)
This is a new service offered to inpatients with diabetes requiring insulin. The Primary Team enters an endocrine consult for BGMS and the multidisciplinary BGMS will follow and write orders regarding diabetes management for that patient during the length of the inpatient stay. A flow sheet for nursing documentation of BBGM results and insulin administered has been developed to track patient response to therapy.
Medical Surgical Nurse Internship Program
This internship program has been at the Clinical Center for many years and has changed over time. The program is now has a 2 year curriculum that includes leadership training and final project as a poster presentation at a regional meeting. The program strives for certification in Medical Surgical Nursing.

Controlled Substance Workflow Taskforce
The policy for handling controlled substances was reviewed and revised to take into consideration new technology and processes to improve safety and security of medications both dispensed by pharmacy and controlled substances brought in by the patient from home.
5SW Day Hospital EBP Project: Venoscope as an effective IV insertion tool pH for enteral feeding tube verification
Evidence Based Practice projects for units and Clinical Practice Committee, championed with staff in order for the steps of EBP to be integrated into work activities.
Diabetes Training module for Nurses
Module developed to have nurses stay up to date with care and management of patient with diabetes. This is an on-line training module for nurses to complete at their own pace.
Alaris remediation and backcheck valve safety plan
Members of the Standardization Committee worked with Cardinal Health during recall of the Alaris infusion pumps. The Clinical Center used the backcheck valve during the interim period to provide additional safety measure until all of the pumps could be evaluated and repaired if needed.
Waived Testing PPR
Periodic performance review is done as part of the Clinical Center’s self assessment for JCAHO review. Waived testing includes laboratory tests done outside of the clinical laboratory such as blood glucose testing, specific gravity and breathilizer. All of the approved tests were reviewed and recommendations made to assure compliance with JCAHO standards.
Insulin administration Workflow
Performance Improvement Committee reviewed data related to insulin dose omissions and insulin administration flow diagram. The PIC members formulated a plan to address educational and process issues from the gap analysis

NIH Emergency Response for Clinical Care
The NIH surge program was co-led with another CNS. Developed with co-leader supplies, process for patient assessment and triage, and coordinated with other NIH team members for several exercises in 2006 & 2007.
Influenza Vaccination Program using NIH Nursing Staff
The program has been led by CNS and co-coordinated by 2 Nurses from the nursing department for over 6 years. Mission is to reduce the incidence of transmission of influenza to staff and patients.
Powered Air Purifying Respiratory (PAPR) Program
The respirator program includes PAPR training for NIH staff of all departments in order to prevent transmission of TB.
Administration of Hazardous Agents
Program developed to education and consultation to staff administering cytotoxic and biologic agents to patients with a variety of diagnoses such as those with rheumatic disorders.

NIH Emergency Response for Clinical Care
Member of the Emergency Response Partnership with the NIH Clinical Center, Suburban Hospital and the National Naval Medical Center. With her CNS colleagues, developed and implemented the Surge Area Activation Standard of Practice for Clinical Nursing Staff.
Neuroscience Nurse Internship Program
The Neuroscience Nurse Internship Program (NNIP) is a twenty month clinical internship developed for recent nursing graduates and registered nurses interested in specializing in neuroscience nursing. The NNIP is a collaboration between the NINDS and the Clinical Center’s Nursing and Patient Care Services. Since 1988, sixteen classes of neuroscience nurse interns have graduated from the program.
Annual Review Course for the American Board of Neuroscience Nursing Certification Examination
This three day course in collaboration with the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke has been presented annually since 2000. In September of 2009, the course will be offered for the tenth consecutive year

Delirium Algorithm and Standards Development
The delirium algorithm program was developed for early identification of delirium in patient receiving stem cell transplantation. This led to an department wide standard of practice development for the care of patient with delirium.
Falls Risk Tool and Intervention
Development of a falls risk tool for early detection of risk in the patient population seen at the Clinical Center. The tool is integrated into the standard of practice for fall risk detection and prevention.
