Clinical Research Training Fellowship Program
Physical Therapy in the Rehabilitation Medicine Department at the NIH Clinical Center maintains an active clinical research affiliation program by providing opportunities for graduate, post graduate and academicians to participate in a clinical research training program in support of ongoing clinical research trials and other scientific investigations at NIH. The program, which began in 2001, provides an opportunity for persons to review, conduct, execute, and publish research. The area of clinical research is based on patient populations with rare diagnoses in the areas of oncology, neurology, orthopedics, cardiopulmonary pathologies, and pediatrics. This is a non-degree program.

Application review is year-round. Interested parties should have at least two years of clinical experience and must submit a resume along with a two-page letter of intent and three letters of recommendation. Ideas for research will be mutually generated between the Physical Therapy staff and the applicant based on current and future studies, applicant's prior experience, and participant availability. Individuals have the choice of selecting a one-year or a six-month training program. (This program is currently being revised).

Volunteer Students and Clinical Internships
Students interested in a physical therapy career are chosen on a first-come, first-serve basis to shadow the physical therapy staff. The individual applies to volunteer through the NIH volunteer office and will be selected through group process after all staff has reviewed the candidate’s curriculum vitae/resume.

Students are accepted in the last rotation of the academic year for an 8 – 16 week internship. Applicants may be interested in clinical patient care or clinical research. Requests are accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

Intramural Research (Post-Baccalaureate IRTA) and Summer Internship Program (SIP)
Students who have graduated from college may participate in the Post-Baccalaureate Intramural Research Training Program (IRTA) and the Summer Internship Program (SIP). View the application process.
