NIH Clinical Center Senior Staff

Frederick P. Ognibene, MD, MCCM, FACP

An Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of Cornell University Medical College in 1979, Dr. Frederick P. Ognibene completed an internal medicine internship and residency at New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center. In 1982, Dr. Ognibene came to the National Institutes of Health in the first class of NIH clinical fellows in critical care; later becoming a senior investigator in the Clinical Center's Critical Care Medicine Department.

Dr. Ognibene served as director of the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Training Program and co-chaired the NIH Graduate Medical Education Committee for clinical fellows in accredited training programs until May 2003, when he was appointed director of the newly established Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education in the NIH Clinical Center. In 2009, he was appointed NIH Clinical Center Deputy Director for Educational Affairs and Strategic Partnerships. Dr. Ognibene is responsible for all of the clinical research educational programs in the NIH Clinical Center as well as trans-NIH clinical training programs. He is actively engaged in the development of new educational programs in the Clinical Center and new partnerships with extramural investigators. He is a past president (2007) of the 15,000 member Society of Critical Care Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Master of the American College of Critical Care Medicine. Since 2014, he is the NIH liaison on the Board of Directors for the Association for Clinical and Translational Science. He is the recipient of multiple NIH Director's Awards and was honored with election to the Association of American Physicians in 2010. He is co-author with Dr. John I. Gallin of the textbook, Principles and Practice of Clinical Research, published by Elsevier and currently in its third edition.
