NHLBI invites volunteers ages 18-80 of African descent with or without sickle cell trait and patients with sickle cell disease to participate in a one-time visit research study. Volunteers will provide blood samples that will be used to look for a link between the PKLR gene and pyruvate kinase protein. The PKLR gene is active in the liver and in the red blood cells and helps to create protein called pyruvate kinase that is essential in normal functioning of the red blood cells. Compensation provided. Refer to Study #18-H-0146.
