Clinical Center updates fire plan

Hospital staff move a patient bed
As a tertiary care hospital, the NIH Clinical Center admits patients because of their condition or treatment are incapable of self-preservation in a fire emergency. To mitigate this risk, hospital staff must be trained and capable to identify, report and react for a fire emergency.

Clinical Center staff are trained and able to identify, report and react to fire emergencies in the hospital. This is important because many patients are incapable of self-preservation in a fire emergency due to their condition or treatment. The hospital’s new fire emergency plan outlines responsibilities and actions required to effectively respond to a fire emergency in order to save lives and minimize property damage.

The fire prevention and response plan focuses on measures to prevent, report and respond to a fire emergency in areas that provide and support the care, treatment and diagnosis of patients. Specifically, the plan defines the roles of staff and licensed practitioners at and away from the fire’s point of origin, how and when to report a fire, the use fire extinguishers and how to relocate or evacuate patients.
