Patient Volunteer
Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland seek participants age five and older with childhood-onset brain injury (e.g.,cerebral palsy) to join a research study. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and/or electroencephalography (EEG) may be used to study brain activity. Learning how the brain controls muscles may help design treatments to help patients with brain injury to move better.
Study participation includes:
- Physical exam and medical history
- At least one session of NIRS and/or EEG with sensors placed on the scalp
- Repetitive movements of arms and legs will be monitored
- A training program may be offered to test a strategy for improving movements
- Parents must give permission for minors to participate
- Compensation is provided
- There is no charge for study - related assessments
You may qualify for this study if you (or your child):
- Have a diagnosis of a brain injury before 13 years of age that makes it hard to move an arm and leg on one side of the body, or that makes it hard to move both legs. Cerebral palsy is an example of this type of diagnosis
- Are at least 5 years old
- Can walk at least 20 feet without stopping with or without a walking aid
You may not be eligible if you (or your child):
- Have an injury or health condition other than childhood-onset brain injury that affects your ability to move a body part repetitively for short periods
- Have recently had a botulinum toxin injections or are taking medications for muscle tone
