Do You Have Chronic Kneecap Pain?

Join NIH Research

a woman holding her kneecap in pain

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) seek individuals with kneecap pain (also referred to as patellofemoral or anterior knee pain). We are studying how muscle weakness around the knee may lead to changes in kneecap motion and pain. Understanding what causes kneecap pain may help us to develop better treatments in the future.

Study participants will have:

  • 2 outpatient visits lasting about 3 and 5 hours each
  • A physical examination and a clinical evaluation of the knee
  • Questionnaires about their knee pain
  • MRI scans of the knee while it is still and while it is in motion

Eligible participants must:

  • Be 18-55 years old
  • Have a diagnosis of kneecap pain OR have experienced severe kneecap pain for over 6 months
  • Be able to have MRI scans
  • Have NO history of major knee injuries (e.g., ligament tears), knee diseases (e.g., arthritis), or knee surgeries (e.g., ACL injury)

There is no cost for participation. Compensation is provided.

Location: The NIH Clinical Center, America's Research Hospital is located on the Metro red line (Medical Center stop) in Bethesda, Maryland.
