brain to gut medical illustration

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are conducting a research study to better understand the relationship between your brain and the bacteria in your gut, and how this may influence alcohol use. Recent studies have shown that the bacteria in the gut may play a role in a wide-range of medical disorders. Early studies have reported changes in bacteria found in alcohol-dependent individuals. However, there is little research on the relationship between these changes and behavior.

We are looking for a variety of volunteers who have different drinking habits. If you drink socially, moderately, or a lot you may be eligible for participation. Compensation is provided.

Participation includes:

  • A screening visit
  • About 6 outpatient study visits to the NIH Clinical Center
  • Study visits that include bloodwork, a scan to measure body fat, stool and urine collections, questionnaires, measurement of your metabolism, and spending time in our bar simulation

To be eligible, you should be:

  • Between the ages of 21 and 70
  • Without any significant medical or drug problems

The NIH Clinical Center, America's Research Hospital is located on the Metro red line (Medical Center stop) in Bethesda, Maryland.
