Therapeutic Targets in African-American Youth with Type 2 Diabetes
Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH ) Clinical Center are seeking African American Adolescents with Type 2 diabetes mellitus for a study of newer treatment methods.
Purpose: To better understand combination therapy with liraglutide and metformin versus metformin alone.
Who: African American adolescents (boys and girls) with type 2 diabetes mellitus between the ages of 12-21 years old.
What: During the study, participants will provide urine and blood samples and a dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan. Participants will be given either liraglutide and metformin or metformine alone. Parents and guardians will be informed about possible procedures and must give consent for participation. Compensation is provided.
Where: The study takes place at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD. For convenience, some visits can be arranged at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC.
Time Required: A total of 5 Visits: 1 screening visit, 2 overnight stays at the hospital, and 2 follow-up visits over 3 months.
