Neurocysticercosis Research Study

Do You Have Cysticercosis (Pork Tapeworm in the Brain)?

Are you from Mexico, Central or South America, or India with hydrocephalus, seizures, or an inflammatory condition of the central nervous system without a diagnosis? The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is studying people with cysticercosis and those likely to have cysticercosis. All study related tests and procedures are provided at no cost to you. Travel to and from NIH may be reimbursed.

  • Evaluations and follow-up consults of medically indicated tests which may include blood testing, MRI and CT scans, X-rays, lumbar puncture, eye exam, and other diagnostic procedures needed to diagnose and treat patient.
  • Treatment with anti-parasitic and anti-inflammatory medications, as needed.
  • Study visits will be based on treatment, every 3-6 month, and annually once off treatment.
  • Your participation in this study will last about 5 years.

You can participate in this study if you:

  • Are 3 to 75 years of age (minors must have parent/guardian consent to participate)
  • Likely or definite diagnosis of neurocysticercosis.

Location: The NIH Clinical Center, America's Research Hospital is located on the Metro red line (Medical Center stop) in Bethesda, Maryland.
