Healthy Volunteers for Lung Study

Inflammation in the Lungs

a woman breathing with her eyes closed

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, want to learn more about the causes of inflammation in the lungs. Chronic inflammation in our airways and lungs can cause lung diseases, such as asthma. Researchers want to collect cells from the lungs of healthy individuals to compare them to cells that have been collected from people with asthma and other lung diseases.

Your participating in this study, as someone without asthma, may help us to better understand airway inflammation and help also in the development of new treatments for people with asthma.

Compensation for participation will be provided.

Consider participating if you:

  • Are healthy and 18 or older
  • Do not have a history of asthma or any other serious lung conditions
  • Have not smoked in the last three months
  • Do not have heart disease

During the study you may have:

  • One testing visit and one to two night stay at the NIH Clinical Center
  • Tests of your lung function, blood work, urine collection, chest X-ray
  • A procedure to collect cells from your airway (bronchoscopy)

Location: The NIH Clinical Center, America's research hospital, is conveniently located on the Metro Red Line (Medical Center stop) in Bethesda, MD.
