The Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of the NIH Clinical Center provides scientific, programmatic, and administrative leadership for the ongoing research at the Clinical Center. The CSO coordinates scientific activities, establishes priorities, and analyzes and evaluates progress. In addition, the CSO oversees the research budget process of the Clinical Center and develops policies and procedures for the scientific review of all intramural clinical protocols, research funding opportunities, and the Clinical Center Board of Scientific Counselors.

Leighton Chan, MD, MPH

Dr. Chan was selected as the acting as the CSO in March 2023. He is also the Chief of the Rehabilitation Medicine Department.
