Mission Statement
The staff of the Materials Management and Environmental Services Department (MMESD) at the NIH Clinical Center support NIH's clinical research mission by providing: medical supply procurement and distribution; medical equipment safety and maintenance; and a clean environment for patients, staff, and the public.

Scope

Manage medical/surgical supplies and equipment to provide support for patient care.

Receive, store, inventory, and distribute medical-surgical supplies, equipment, and biomedical devices to the NIH Clinical Center.

Prepare, decontaminate, and sterilize medical supplies/ equipment and surgical instruments.

Stock automated medical supply stations.

Assemble medical-surgical kits and clinical procedure trays.

Perform safety monitoring in all MMESD areas.

Guide the selection of appropriate medical equipment for clinical care.

Conduct planned maintenance and timely repair of equipment, and evaluation of all equipment related adverse events that could have an impact on patient and staff.

Oversee the property accountability process for the NIH Clinical Center.

Ensure a clean environment for patients, staff, and the public.

Collect soiled patient linen, ensure appropriate laundering, and distribute clean linen to all patient care areas.

Collect and dispose of waste throughout the Clinical Center complex, and oversee confidential document shredding.
