Elective Description

The Laboratory of Pathology, National Cancer Institute (NCI) offers a fully accredited residency in anatomic pathology. Residents enrolled in Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-approved residency programs in anatomic and clinical pathology are eligible for one-month elective rotations at the NIH. Patients at the NIH are enrolled in approximately 1,000 research protocols conducted by 15 institutes and centers. In addition, the staff of the Laboratory of Pathology receives more than 3,000 cases in consultation each year, resulting in a rich and diversified exposure to the practice of anatomic pathology.

Resident Electives are offered in surgical pathology and cytopathology, as well as in other subspeciality areas including hematopathology, molecular diagnostics, flow cytometry or cytogenetics. During service rotations residents are responsible for all aspects of the diagnostic workup, including the ordering and review of special procedures, and the dictation of the final pathology report. Residents attend all conferences and journal clubs, including twice-weekly teaching rounds. Residents may also attend research data clubs to gain insight into ongoing research in the department.
