Clinical Electives Program: Pediatric Oncology

Fall, Winter, and Spring Sessions. Four-Week Session
Note: We do not accept students in July.

Prerequisite: Completion of clerkships in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine

Rotation Coordinator:
Mary Frances Wedekind-Malone, MD

Rotation Description:
The Pediatric Oncology Branch (POB) practices a combined modality approach to the treatment of childhood malignancies, especially sarcomas and recurrent tumors. The POB has active drug development, experimental therapeutics, and immunotherapy programs. Patients include children, adolescents and young adults enrolled on current NIH sponsored clinical trials. The rotation emphasizes the important connection between research and patient care in pediatric oncology. The student will be supervised directly by the POB attending physician and clinical fellows. Students will attend daily inpatient and outpatient rounds and multiple weekly POB conferences. Students are expected to research relevant topics and present a 30-minute talk near the end of their rotation.

Selection of Applicants:
Applicants will be selected based on review of the student's credentials and cover letter, which should outline their goals for the rotation. Only one student will be allowed per session. Availability may be limited due to programmatic constraints.

This is a highly specialized rotation in research Pediatric Oncology. Only medical students with experience and/or interest in pediatric oncology will be considered and possibly selected, on an occasional basis. Selected students are required to have malpractice/liability coverage for the elective period.
