Clinical Electives Program: Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

Rotation Description
The elective research rotation in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) offers medical students the unique experience provided by the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, a state-of-the-art clinical research hospital with 200 inpatient beds, surgical day hospital and outpatient clinic facilities to support the clinical care required for patients enrolled in human subject Investigation protocols. At the Clinical Center, the student will be exposed to and learn how to manage a large cadre of complex patients with a spectrum of reproductive genetic and endocrine pathology in collaboration with teaching faculty in Adult Endocrinology, Pediatric Endocrinology, and Medical Genetics. Students can use the enormous resources of the NIH computer system and one of the finest medical libraries in the United States. Students will attend weekly Clinical conferences, preoperative and academic didactic conferences, as well as specialty program conferences with presentations and discussions covering reproductive problems and state-of-the art research relating to endocrinology and reproduction.

The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) REI program is comprised of faculty from four institutions: the National Institutes of Health, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), and the Shady Grove Fertility Center. This program has the mission to train reproductive endocrinology and infertility fellows who will become physician-scientists, serve as faculty in military, government, and academic institutions and provide evidence-based cutting edge treatments to couples with infertility.

Rotation Objectives

  • Provide unique clinical experience of providing optimum care for patients with reproductive problems in a research environment.
  • Learn the consulting skills needed to formulate a diagnostic and therapeutic plan.
  • Effectively communicate information to patient, family, attending physicians, and nursing staff.
  • Become familiar with a variety of diagnostic tests and therapeutic interventions.

Selection of Applicants
Applicants will be selected based on review of the student's credentials and cover letter, which should outline their goals for the rotation. Usually only one student will be allowed per session. Availability may be limited due to program constraints.
