COVID-19
Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic the NIH Blood Bank is now accepting blood donations by appointment only.

Support our Clinical Center patients by scheduling an appointment to donate blood.

To safeguard NIH Blood Bank donors and staff please forgo walk-in donations at this time.

Access to the NIH Blood Bank
To protect patients, visitors and staff, effective March 26, 2020, all staff, patients and visitors (including blood donors) must enter the Clinical Center at the North Atrium entrance and be screened by a member of the Public Health Service. Effective Monday May 4, 2020, platelet collections will return to the Donor Center at Fishers Lane in Rockville, with Friday morning only at main campus. Our normal blood donor entrance on the NIH campus will not be available during this time; however, blood donor parking is available in its usual location.

Donor Room Safety Precautions
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have implemented social distancing precautions and additional cleaning procedures for your protection. For the safety of patients, donors, and staff, please consider postponing your donation if you have traveled from areas with high transmission of COVID-19 in the last 28 days, even if you do not have any symptoms.

Can I Donate Blood?
The usual eligibility criteria for blood donation are still in effect. Additionally, please do not donate blood or platelets if any of the following apply to you:

In the last 14 days,

  • You have had fever or respiratory symptoms (e.g. sneezing, coughing, sniffling, or runny nose)

In the last 28 days,

  • You have been diagnosed with or suspected of having COVID-19
  • You have had contact with someone who was diagnosed with or suspected of having COVID-19
