Radiology and Imaging Sciences
The patient activities of our department encompass clinical care and research support in the areas of Body Imaging, Interventional Radiology, Neuroradiology, Nuclear Medicine and Clinical Image Processing Service (CIPS).
These activities are conducted on state-of-the-art equipment. Currently, Radiology and Imaging Sciences operates six MRI scanners, three at 3 Tesla and three at 1.5 Tesla. An additional two 3 Tesla scanners are being added. The CT scanners consist of a 64 slice single and a 64 slice dual source MDCT, a 320 slice MDCT operated in conjunction with NHLBI, and a 16 slice scanner. An additional 256 slice MDCT is being installed in our interventional robotic suite.
Diagnostic services in ultrasound, digital mammography, PET/CT, and nuclear medicine are additionally provided. All diagnostic modalities are linked to the department PACS system. Advanced processing capabilities for 3D and functional studies are provided through our CIPS (Clinical Image Processing Service (CIPS) laboratory.
Clinical radiology services are provided to patients on clinical protocols originating either at the Clinical Center or from any of the NIH Institutes. Collaboration between Institute staff and radiologists in subspeciality areas produces high quality imaging examinations yielding outstanding results for NIH patients. Institute physicians and researchers should contact radiologists in the areas below for patient assistance and protocol preparation:
- Body Imaging (conventional x-ray, mammography, ultrasound, MRI and CT)
- Interventional Radiology (biopsy, minimally invasive therapy, angiography)
- Neuroradiology (CT and MRI studies of the neurologic system)
- Nuclear Medicine (SPECT, PET/CT, radionuclide imaging)
- CIPS (Clinical Image Processing Service)
