Summer training sessions emphasize impact, importance of science and clinical trials

Medical Officer Dr. Regina James from the NIH National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities presents during the NIH Clinical Center Summer Internship Program Lecture Series. The weekly lecture series invited NIH staff to share their career journey and research experiences with the summer interns. The eight-week summer research program concluded on August 11. The NIH Summer Internship Program is open to high school through professional school students.

Ph.D. students dive into the fundamentals of clinical and translational research

Twenty students, representing 17 academic institutions throughout the U.S., took part in the Clinical and Translational Research Course for Ph.D. Students at the NIH Clinical Center July 10-21. During the two week course, participants learned about the design and regulatory fundamentals of clinical and translational research, participated in a mock-Institutional Review Board meeting lead by NIH IRB chairs, and met with Ph.D. investigators who are involved with clinical and translational research the NIH and U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The NIH Clinical Center welcomed 79 incoming clinical fellows from across the country during the annual New Clinical Fellows Orientation Program on July 10 hosted by the Clinical Center's Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education (OCRTME). Following the orientation, new clinical fellows and their program directors networked with Clinical Center Chief Executive Officer Dr. James Gillman, NIH Deputy Director for Intramural Research Dr. Michael Gottesman, in addition to institute directors, intramural scientific and clinical directors, training program directors, NIH principal investigators and Clinical Center administrative staff.

Howard University summer health professions visit NIH

On June 29, the NIH Clinical Center welcomed more than 75 undergraduate students participating in the Summer Health Professions Education Program at Howard University. During their visit, the students learned about NIH training opportunities and toured NIH labs and facilities. The Clinical Center's Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education staff organized a four-person panel of current trainees/NIH faculty for a question and answer session on career paths. This was the program's sixth year visiting the NIH campus.
