Who We Are

The Department of Clinical Research Informatics (DCRI) is responsible for creating and maintaining the technological infrastructure necessary to support the clinical and research activities conducted in the NIH Clinical Center (CC). This includes building and maintaining servers and client applications, configuring and deploying desktop and laptop computers for CC and IC staff, developing custom applications, maintaining system operations, and managing databases.

DCRI provides expert technical support on an extensive range of information system topics and supports the various administrative, clinical and research activities of the NIH, CC and the Clinical Research Center (CRC) through the development, implementation, operation and management of software applications used by over 4,500 individuals.

The Department of Clinical Research Informatics (DCRI) is committed to delivering secure, responsive, high-quality, customer-oriented information technology services and support that enhance clinical care and research studies.


  • Provide clinical systems that support efficient and effective workflow processes, enhance patient safety and allow rapid user-friendly access to reliable data necessary to promote information exchange and increase knowledge in the user community.
  • Provide a secure, dependable and accessible technical environment that supports the growing information technology requirements related to an available, complete Electronic Health Record (EHR). Maintain the highest levels of customer satisfaction with the systems, applications and support provided by DCRI

2014/2015 Goals – Architecture

  • Maintain a comprehensive enterprise architecture that will ensure flexibility, high availability, stability of operations and security over patient records.
  • Maintain 99.9% System Uptime across Systems
  • Maintain Level 2 Data Center
    • Redundant power, network, air handling components
  • Simplify the Enterprise Architecture
    • Document current system and data flows
    • Retire older technologies
    • Develop future technical architecture plan
  • Enhance CC IT system monitoring program

  • Utilize User Group Subcommittees & Outreach Programs
  • Reach HIMSS Analytics Level 7
  • Address Meaningful Use 1 & 2
  • Provide100% Clinical Data via CRIS Sunrise
    • Outside Medical Records, Admission Consents, IC Systems
  • Enhance Usability
    • Create Protocol Order Set Service Center
    • Create streamline flow sheet to capture patient assessment and treatment
    • Improve progress notes creation via QuickNotes
    • Integrate Images to CRIS
  • Ensure Clinical Reliable Desktops/Workstation on Wheels
