Fellowship in Transfusion Medicine

The two-year fellowship training program prepares physicians for a career in transfusion medicine, providing experience in clinical, technical, investigational and administrative aspects of the field in preparation for the certifying examination in transfusion medicine/blood banking offered by the American Board of Pathology. The first year, the fellow performs clinical consultations involving component therapy and apheresis, participates in daily patient care problems, conducts clinical rounds, participates in journal club and transfusion committee as well as didactic teaching of allied health care staff including rotating fellows and resident physicians, nurses, medical technologists (MTs), and Specialist in Blood Bank (SBB) students. The second year focuses on research opportunities that include the areas of gene therapy, transfusion-transmitted disease, advanced cellular separation and processing, and molecular human leukocyte antigen (HLA) techniques.

Requirements

Applicants must be Board-certified or -eligible in internal medicine, hematology, clinical pathology, or anesthesiology and must be United States (US) citizens or resident aliens.

Stipends

Stipends are in accordance with US federal government regulations for federal salary.
